the cichlid kid
I have been thinking about wet/dry external filters and the bacteria in them and was wondering how much light they need to remain healthy. Are sumps inside cabinets under tanks less healthy thank sumps on open stands? any thoughts or comments appreciated.
trofius
bacteria does not need light to grow, your sump can be in total darkness and will work very well. BUT a really good filter has a really good biolayer and algae, protzoans, and bacteria can all work together to form this and algae needs light, b
Ash
I thought light could be harmful to bacteria? or is that only denitrifying anerobic bacteria?
GTR73
My understanding was nitrifying bacteria are photosensitive especially to blue & UV light while suspended in the water column (ie, not good for them). So I guess as long as your sump isn't in direct sunlight is all you need to worry about.
